Captain Steve Tapler, from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department

Captain Steve Tapler, from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, commands District 4 of RCSD’s area of responsibility. The District extends from downtown Columbia to the Newberry County line. He is in his sixteenth year in law enforcement.

With such a large expanse of geography, Captain Tapler frequently interacts with law enforcement entities stretching from USC on-campus police to Irmo, Chapin, and at times Newberry. He is responsible for managing a force that would ideally be fully staffed at 30 officers.

He estimates that 70 percent of his weeks are spent doing personnel management, and that the balance of his time is spent at crime scenes where he works to mitigate situations and lend assistance to officers who are active at the scene.
