Please join us for lunch!
For our meeting Monday, September 11th, 2023, we welcome
George S. Bailey, President/Director, Boyd Foundation.
The Boyd Foundation creates, supports, implements, and promotes outdoor recreational opportunities and facilities, the appreciation of wildlife, beautification of urban areas, educational programs and enhancing the quality of life of the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina and the Midlands at large. Darnall Boyd, a Columbia business executive, and his wife, Susan, a descendant of the founders of the City of Columbia, formed the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Foundation, Inc., in 2010. The Foundation is focused on the promotion of projects of specific interest to the Boyd family, including education, beautification, creation of outdoor recreational opportunities, wildlife enhancement, and propagation and enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Columbia and the midlands. The Foundation undertakes its own “signature” projects and generally does NOT provide the ongoing operating expenses of, or support for capital campaigns undertaken by other charitable organizations. The Foundation is integrally involved in all aspects of the projects it underwrites, including project scope, design, contracting, bidding, and construction oversight.
Major decisions are made by the Boyd Foundation’s Board of Directors. The Board currently consists of nine Board members, each of whom brings various skill sets to the Board, including real estate, finance, legal, investments and design. The Board meets quarterly. Day-to-day operations of the Foundation are divided between the President and the Executive Director. The President (George S. Bailey) vets all proposed projects and closely monitors each project the Foundation underwrites from start to finish. The Executive Director manages all the Foundation’s real estate and portfolio investments and monitors all tax and accounting matters.
Mr. Bailey is Of Counsel in the firm of Sojourner Caughman Thomas LLC. His clients benefit from his extensive legal expertise in taxation, estate planning, probate and business succession matters. He provides experienced counsel that’s backed by his decades of work in estate planning and administration throughout the Midlands.
George focuses on the intricacies of estate planning and probate. He works closely with families and individuals to help them solve estate matters with practical solutions that accomplish their goals.
George has served as President of the Columbia Taxation Study Group, Chair of the Taxation Specialization Advisory Board, and President of the Section of Taxation of the South Carolina Bar.
