COL (Ret.) Dr. Craig Currey, D.Min. Chief Executive Officer, Transitions Homeless Center.
Colonel (Retired) Craig Currey is the Chief Executive Officer of Transitions Homeless Center, the Midlands largest homeless facility located in Columbia, SC. He began work there in April, 2012 after retiring from a thirty year career in the U.S. Army. He has led the 260-bed facility as it meets the needs of the community’s homeless adults.
In the Army, his final posting was as the Deputy Commanding Officer of Fort Jackson, South Carolina—the Army’s premier Training Center. Having spent much of his later career in Columbia as the Director of the Directorate of Basic Combat Training, Commander of Victory Brigade and 2-39 Infantry Battalion, and the Chief of Training on post, he is now proud to call SC home.
Overseas, he was the Chief of Staff for Task Force 134 in Iraq working theater detention operations for Multi-National Forces-Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Chief of Exercises for U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg, Germany, a platoon leader in Korea, and deployed to Haiti as part of Operation Uphold Democracy.
Across America, COL Currey was in 2-75 Ranger Regiment and 2-60 Infantry, 9th Infantry Division (Motorized) at Fort Lewis, Washington; assistant history professor at West Point, New York; 18th Airborne Corps and 1-325 Airborne Infantry Regiment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and the Defense Intelligence Agency at Bolling Air Force Base and the Pentagon.
Commissioned from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1982, COL Currey is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College where he also received a Master of Military Art and Science, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a Master of Arts in History, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College where he received a Master of Strategic Studies. He also has a Doctor of Ministry from South University.
COL Currey’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He also earned the Ranger Tab, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Combat Action Badge, Joint Meritorious Unit Award with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Jordanian Jump Wings, and Belgian Jump Wings. He also has the Primicerius Order of Saint Maurice for lifetime achievement in the infantry and is a Fort Jackson Hall of Fame inductee. He also has the Lifetime of Service Award from Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH).
He is married to Maria. They have three grown children and six grandchildren. Laura works at Water Mission in Charleston, SC; David is a corporate executive for Lowe’s in Charlotte; and Paul is a financial consultant in Spartanburg, SC.
