Eighth Grade Civics Teacher Chris McDuffie has been named the 2021 SCISA Middle School Teacher of the Year. He is the 13th Heathwood faculty member to earn Teacher of the Year honors since 2001.

Mr. McDuffie joined the Heathwood faculty in 2013, and both his knowledge and his passion for civics education soon became legendary. In the words of Middle School Head Maria Madden, “Chris is one of those special educators who has a tremendous impact on his students, both while they are in his class and during the years beyond their time with him in the classroom. The passion for his content and craft is so evident in his teaching, how he engages his students and in his relationships with his advisees. He is a gifted teacher and respected educator. I am so grateful to have him as a colleague and member of the Heathwood faculty!”
Former Middle School Head Suzanne Nagy called Mr. McDuffie “an amazing, master teacher who demonstrates for us all as educators what it means to teach, adding, “He is curious. He is professional. He is present. He is determined.”

Head of School Chris Hinchey said, “Chris McDuffie is an exceptional and engaging teacher. He exudes excitement and positive energy, and holds his students to high standards, while also teaching them difficult and important topics. Chris is well deserving of this award and Heathwood Hall is lucky to call him a Highlander.”
In all, Mr. McDuffie has 20 years of teaching experience, having worked at schools in Richmond, Virginia, and Charleston and Sumter, SC before coming to Heathwood. He holds a B.A. and an M. Ed.
